What Are Holistic Practitioners?


Today we are starting to become a little leery of our health care.  We are starting to think that 'progress' is overrated, or at least when it comes to ignoring centuries old practices that have been proven to work.  Using some of these old practices is what holistic practitioners do. 

Professionals who don't just treat one aspect of the person but rather incorporate the whole person: mind, body, and spirit, are using the 'whole' or holistic approach to health care.  These practitioners use many non-invasive, drug free techniques to help keep their patients healthy and to help treat chronic problems. Unlike drug therapies, these holistic methods don't have the negative side effects associated with many prescription drugs.

Modern western medicine tends to look at the symptoms of an illness only after they've presented themselves there is little focus on prevention.  The whole person, mind, body, and spirit are largely ignored with the focus only on that one part that is sick.  Rarely do they look for the underlying cause but merely treat the symptoms.

If you look in the Holy Bible at the person of Jesus, What did he look at and what did he treat when he saw a sick person?  Let’s look at some stories. When Jesus healed the paralyzed man in (Mat. 9, 1) he didn’t say first, “Get up, pick up your bed and go home” first. He saw that the man needed spiritual healing first by forgiving his sins. Jesus healed the inner being first before healing the physical being.

In that same chapter (Mat. 9, 20-22) A certain woman had severe bleeding for twelve years  and she had a positive mind set saying,” If I only I touch his cloak I will get well.” When she touched his cloak, Jesus turned around and saw her and said, “Courage, my daughter! Your faith has made you well.” The story relates that at that very moment she became well. In this case, Jesus healed her body because the other two aspects were whole. She had a positive mind, and a strong spiritual faith.

Holistic medicine takes this approach.  They focus on the mind, body, and spirit and encourage practices that can prevent illness from happening in the first place.

A holistic professional can use various methods to help their patient achieve and maintain good health and well being.  Some of the most common methods used are: acupuncture, massage therapy, aromatherapy, meditation, and Chinese herbal medicine, to name just a few.

The holistic approach recognizes that the human body is designed to heal itself and sometimes just needs a little help.  Just changing some simple daily lifestyle choices and a positive mental outlook can have dramatic effects on the body and its ability to prevent and even cure many illnesses.

Many of these holistic approaches are starting to be recognized and endorsed by the once resistant 'traditional' medical community.  With the awareness that not all man-made medications are good for us and often create their own set of problems, a lot of doctors are starting to incorporate a more holistic approach in their practice.

Most states require some type of licensing for anyone who is treating people using these methods.  Most holistic professionals have as much, or nearly as much, schooling as a regular M.D.

If you don't believe that just 'popping a pill' every time you have a health issue is the best way to go, if you are concerned with the long term side effects of taking a lot of medications, or if you just think that prevention makes more sense than waiting until there is a problem and treating it after it occurs, you should find holistic practitioners in your area and learn how you can become more pro-active in regards to your health. Remember we are spiritual beings, with a rational mind enclosed within our bodies. What Is Holistic Medicine

Today with so many people getting back to basics and going green,  you are starting to hear a lot about holistic medicine. But have you ever wondered what that means and what it can mean to the health and well being of you and your family?

The term holistic simply means to take a 'whole' approach. In medicine today your doctor tends to only focus on one small area of your health and only tries to relieve the symptoms, very often completely overlooking the cause.

For example, if you've been diagnosed with high blood pressure, your doctor will no doubt prescribe a blood pressure lowering prescription drug. More often than not this medicine will have moderate to severe side effects.

Since the medicine only treats the symptoms, and not the cause, you will have to continue to take it for an extended period of time. Sometimes taking a medication for a long period of time can make the side effects worse, which will often lead to the need to take medication to cure the side effects!

Holistic methods, on the other hand, will not just focus on your high blood pressure.
Instead it will look at all aspects of your lifestyle: nutrition, physical, emotional, spiritual, environmental, etc. It will try to solve the root cause of your problem instead of just help you deal with the symptoms.
The holistic approach doesn't rule out the use of prescription drugs but it does encourage trying natural methods first. Harsh drugs are only used as a last resort.

Those who practice holistic methods of health care, also encourage full participation and responsibility for their own health care by their patients. They don't condone a bad lifestyle by their patient and then just giving the patient a drug to help alleviate the symptoms of an ailment directly related to those poor lifestyle choices.

Usually a holistic practitioner will try to help their patients achieve more balance between their physical, emotional, environmental, and spiritual lives to promote better overall health. It's about integrating the mind and body and how they can become balanced for better overall health.

Many different approaches are grouped together under the holistic name, you've no doubt heard of many of them: acupuncture, yoga, massage, meditation, and aromatherapy are some of the most well known.

Many people use these methods even when they don't have an illness. The idea is to prevent illness and not just cure one. That is another aspect of holistic methods of treatment that sets it apart from 'mainstream' medicine which only worries about curing a problem and not nearly as much about prevention.

If you are concerned about the health and well being of you and your family you owe it to yourself to consider implementing holistic medicine practices into your life today. Don't wait until there is a problem, by starting now you may very well be able to prevent any illnesses from occurring in the first place.
